How to read this figure
Method
Share of honey in the FOB value of the country's goods exports, divided by the share of honey in world goods exports, both in the same year (Balassa index, 1965). The world is the sum of the countries that report to UN Comtrade that year; records that bring together countries which also report on their own, such as the European Union, are left out, so that their members' trade is not repeated. A value above one means the country specialises in honey more than the world average, and a value below one, less.
Limitations
The index is asymmetric: it runs from zero to one when the country does not specialise in honey and from one upwards, without a ceiling, when it does, so a gap between specialised countries does not read the same as one between countries that are not (Laursen, 2015). The world changes each year with the countries that report. Each country reports its own trade under its own recording criteria, and the database does not reconcile them with one another. The most recent year may change as countries complete or correct what they report. The source publishes no named licence; its terms allow transformed data to be redistributed, so the figure is published rather than the original file.
Confidentiality
No threshold: this is the trade aggregate each country reports on its own exports, not calculated over identifiable people or firms.
Revision policy
The whole series is recalculated when the agency publishes a new edition, and the previous version is kept as an erratum with its reason.
